“Julia Long: Provisional Emotions” is the exhibition catalog published for Julia Long’s latest exhibition at Tabula Rasa Gallery. As the artist’s third solo exhibition with us, “Provisional Emotions” presents an “inward” shift in Julia’s creative process: it marks her transition from an observer of the outside world to a portrayer of her own emotions.

By painting, she places herself at a space-time distance and observes her provisional emotions retrospectively. The catalog contains more than fifty watercolours and oil paintings, and several works not on view at the exhibition. It consists of four components: “Faces and Attitudes”, “Mountains and Trees”, “Coffee, cake, flower symbols”, and “Emotions in Between.” The book also includes quotations from Julia’s writing for each chapter and the researcher, writer of Art History Zhang YuLing’s commentary article.

Using coil binding, the catalog resembles that of Julia’s sketchbook. Flipping through the pages, the temporal yet flexible thoughts are the artist’s sketches.
