Leah Tianyue Zhong (born in 1994, Chengdu, China) currently lives and works in Los Angeles, USA. In her body of work focused on painting, Zhong portrays figures and a sense of awareness that exist in a realm between their original form and distortion. Through the interplay of flowing lines, sudden movements, and fleeting shadows on her canvases, Zhong explores the ephemeral aspects encompassing motion, nature, memories, and more. Drawing inspiration from her everyday encounters and seldom-seen historical photographs from 20th-century modern China, she delves into the enigmatic and implicit connections between past events and present experiences. In this exploration, Zhong is intrigued by the intuitive process of transforming photographs into paintings and capturing the elusive essence of experiences that transcend time.

Her recent solo exhibitions include Pause, Arise, MOU PROJECTS (Hong Kong, 2023); A Momentary Playground, duo solo, Long Story Short (Los Angeles, 2022). Selected group exhibitions include The Consolation of Clinamen, Tabula Rasa Gallery (Beijing, 2023); Pressing the ear against the ground I could hear the far galloping coming near, curatorial project by Samuele Visentin (London, 2023); Sprout, Stems Gallery (Belgium, 2023); Breaking News, Long Story Short (Paris, 2022); A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, Yuan Museum (Beijing, 2022); “非长”, 1001 Gallery (Shenzhen, 2021); 50/50, Fold Gallery (London, 2020); Beacon: Selections from the 2020 Royal College of Art Painting programme, Josh Lilley (online exhibition, 2020). Zhong obtained her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018 and her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2020.
